Visions of the future are often framed by the technologies that shape them. This is readily apparent in popular culture’s treatment of the future over the past 50 years. Several recurring themes of these fictional projections have become contemporary concerns in 2017: the specter of artificial intelligence, the rise of robots, virtual worlds, and the existential question of self in an increasingly distributed and fragmented reality. All of which points to an increasingly technological mediation of both reality and identity, raising the larger question of how we are managing these changes culturally.
The Twenty Days of Turin is uncanny both in terms of its subject matter and in the way it prefigures the emotional reality of our own period. This is a book written in 1975 and featuring no technology more advanced than high-end analog audio recordings, yet it grasps the implications of social media in ways cyberpunk never did. It’s a book steeped in the idiosyncratic culture of Turin that speaks to psychic elements of crises now gripping much of the world. The Twenty Days of Turin depicts how the past overflows the feeble efforts of the present to make its own future; in that, it may be the novel that foreshadows our moment more accurately than any number of speculative fictions.

Sometimes people just want a little bit of WordPress. Before hanging a left with the anth101.com site, we pruned it waaaaay down and tried to make it as simple as possible. This is a pretty solid example that WordPress can be just about anything you want if you’re willing to put in a bit of time and effort. I figure having all these things in one place will help someone else (me most likely) at some point.
I had the chance to work more on the ANTH 101 site with Ryan and Mike over winter break. It’s a pretty significant change. It’s almost entirely gutted in terms of the WordPress side of things with a different theme, some new plugins etc. but also some significant changes on how student see and interact with the work they make.
Damn, Caulfield made short work of bringing this gem of a resource to light. Great, timely frame for his remarkable work on topic recently.

.io is one of the fastest-growing top-level domains on the internet, a particular favourite among start-ups and technology companies. It's also one of the most expensive. To the ear of the tech-savvy, “io” sounds like “input/output”, and it’s used for everything from business software and databases to bitcoin and blogs. But like all the other domains we’ve looked at, .io is also a place: a country-code top-level domain, or ccTLD, which refers to a particular place on the Earth's surface. In this case, that place is the British Indian Ocean Territory, a remote but strategically-important scattering of islands in the middle of the Indian Ocean, also known as the Chagos Archipelago.
What does it mean to “own” a digital good – a domain name or otherwise? This strikes me as an incredibly important question for society (for students) to wrestle with, and it’s a question that is made explicit through the Domain of One’s Own initiative.
To videogame fans, that logo is instantly recognizable. It’s the insignia of Duke Nukem 3D, a computer game that revolutionized shoot-’em-up virtual violence in 1996. Featuring a swaggering, steroidal, wisecracking hero, Duke Nukem 3D became one of the top-selling videogames ever, making its creators very wealthy and leaving fans absolutely delirious for a sequel. The team quickly began work on that sequel, Duke Nukem Forever, and it became one of the most hotly anticipated games of all time.

Simple script that automatically uploads all photo files from a connected removable disk/card to Flickr (with Viewing Privacy set to Private). This should be run on a standalone device (eg. Raspberry PI).
I note that previous answers made lots of assumptions about the user's knowledge. This answer attempts to answer the question at a more tutorial level. For every invocation of Python, sys.argv is automatically a list of strings representing the arguments (as separated by spaces) on the command-line. The name comes from the C programming convention in which argv and argc represent the command line arguments. You'll want to learn more about lists and strings as you're familiarizing yourself with Python, but it the meantime, here are a few things to know. You can simply create a script that prints the arguments as they're represented. It also prints the number of arguments, using the len function on the list.

La Piscine stars Alain Delon and Romy Schneider as the main couple who, while on vacation in a gorgeous villa on the French Riviera receive the weird pair of an exuberant, extroverted father with his daughter (Jane Birkin). So the first thing is the force of the main couple in terms of acting. Both are extraordinary names and the image they project is fantastic. They get opposed to the visiting girl, played by a shy Jane Birkin, who will get seduced by Delon.
Setting up a Minecraft server on Linux (Ubuntu 12.04) is a fairly easy task on the command line. When choosing your server, be sure that it has (at a minimum)1GB of RAM, preferably at least 2GB. The High Cracking University (+HCU), was founded by Old Red Cracker (+ORC), considered a genius of reverse engineering and a legendary figure in RCE, to advance research into Reverse Code Engineering (RCE). He had also taught and authored many papers on the subject, and his texts are considered classics in the field and are mandatory reading for students of RCE.[12] The addition of the "+" sign in front of the nickname of a reverser signified membership in the +HCU. Amongst the students of +HCU were the top of the elite Windows reversers worldwide.[12] +HCU published a new reverse engineering problem annually and a small number of respondents with the best replies qualified for an undergraduate position at the university.[12]
Old Red Cracker (abbreviate +ORC) is a pseudonym/handle for a reverser that wrote the now famous +ORC "how to crack" lessons. He was one of the pioneers of publishing cracking lessons on the Internet and therefore very well known among the reverser scene. Not much is known about +ORC since he has never revealed his identity but he has left clues and puzzles on how to reach him.[1] This has led to so called "+ORC Stalking" where individuals have tried to find out who he really is. Some have speculated that he might be from Europe but this has never been confirmed. Among people who have tried to find +ORC's true identity is +Fravia who has even had email correspondence with him and spread his tutorials.[2]

The date was 1st of January in 1994 when Mr Alpha, then in Rebels, had the idea to form an"oldie-group", as he calls it. This new kind of a scene association should release old skooldemos, game-graphics and -musics in collections to keep remembrances awake. It was firstly called "The Remembers" (TR) and also wanted to provide fresh and hot orries to the famous groups that were still around at that time. "Legendary Oldies #2" was the first real product coming from TR, the first part of these oldies was released under the Rebels flag earlier. The first sceners following Mr Alpha were Maverick, H-Bloxx and luckily also Zyron, who agreed on an offer by Mr Alpha in spring 1994.

µIEC was designed in early 2005 as a low cost interface that would allow CBM enthusiasts to save data on commonly available IDE hard disk drives. Development stalled in late 2005 due to stability issues with the firmware. In early 2008, development started again, with an eventual replacement of the µIEC DOS firmware with the more capable sd2iec firmware.
Most of this document has been obsoleted when I designed the ZoomFloppy, a USB adapter that works similar to these X-cables. However, the section on installing a parallel cable in the drive still applies and the basic concepts are still useful. Intro There are a number of ways to connect the C64 or PC to your Commodore disk drive. The X1541-series of cables provides multiple ways to do so, some obsolete today. It is very difficult to figure out which combination of cables and adapters you need. This document attempts to clear up the confusing terminology. I include links for each term to the appropriate section of Joe Forster's X1541 cable pages. If you want to purchase a cable instead of making it yourself, he has a shop for buying them. Just be absolutely sure you understand what you want and know what you're getting before placing an order.
- I've purchased a uIEC/SD with Daughterboard from Jim Brain's site, just awaiting on new ones to come in. In the meantime, I picked up a 2 GB SD card and wanted to prep it beforehand. - Should the card be formatted FAT16 or FAT32, or does it matter? Fat32 is best, but I don't think you will have trouble with Fat16 - Can I just need to copy over all my files over in their respective folders yes, or do they need to be set up in some specific configuration? doesn't matter - Is there any file/folder name character length limit that I need to stick to? No, but if you want to view all the characters, make sure it is still in the normal Commodore disk restrictions (about 16 characters). - Is there any problems reading upper/lower case, or should I convert all the file/folder names to upper or lower case? No probs - What bootloader should I put on the card to help with loading? How do I install the bootloader on the card so it'll run? You don't need one unless you update the firmware. Second question is about JiffyDOS. I picked up the ROM overlay on Jim's site as well, but now have no idea how to actually overlay the ROM onto my C-64. You need to have an EEPROM burner to make your own chip. - How do you upgrade the C-64 with the ROM image? Do I do that with the uIEC/SD? You can't do that. - I noticed a $20 Kernal ROM image with a toggle switch also available. Should I have gotten that one? Yes, sounds like you should have. You might be able to get a refund if you buy that one.

MacPorts is an easy to use system for compiling, installing, and managing open source software. MacPorts may be conceptually divided into two main parts: the infrastructure, known as MacPorts base, and the set of available ports. A MacPorts port is a set of specifications contained in a Portfile that defines an application, its characteristics, and any files or special instructions required to install it. This allows you to use a single command to tell MacPorts to automatically download, compile, and install applications and libraries. But using MacPorts to manage your open source software provides several other significant advantages.
OpenCBM is a library and a set of command line tools that allow to control old Commodore IEC devices like the famous 1541 floppy disk drive with modern computers. You can transfer disk image to and from old discs. As modern computers do not provide a IEC connector, OpenCBM allows to control adapters that attach to your PC. Older PCs use parallel port cables (like the XA1541 or XS1541) and newer ones use an USB adapter (XU1541 or XUM1541).

ack The day cars drove themselves into walls and the hospitals froze A scenario that could happen based on what already has. Illustrations by R. Kikuo Johnson On December 4, 2017, at a little before nine in the morning, an executive at Goldman Sachs was swiping through the day’s market report in the backseat of a hired SUV heading south on the West Side Highway when his car suddenly swerved to the left, throwing him against the window and pinning a sedan and its driver against the concrete median. A taxi ran into the SUV’s rear fender and spun into the next lane, forcing a school-bus driver to slam on his brakes. Within minutes, nothing was moving from the Intrepid to the Whitney. When the Goldman exec came to, his driver swore that the crash hadn’t been his fault: The car had done it.1
Nanni Balestrini’s We Want Everything (Vogliamo tutto), published in 1971, captures an explosive moment of worker militancy in Italy during 1969. It is the story of one man, told by a narrator whose experiences are based on those of the worker and militant Alfonso Natella. It is also, however, the collective story of workers from the Italian south who arrived at the Fiat Mirafiori factory in Turin during the 1960s. These workers were described, in approving terms, by the Italian radical political theorist Mario Tronti as a ‘crude, pagan race’. Balestrini’s narrator says of these new workers: ‘The monsters were coming, the horrible workers’ (WWE 65).

Late last year, Docker snapped up cross-cloud container management service Tutum, but it wasn’t clear how the acquired company’s handiwork would manifest under the Docker brand. Tutum was built from the ground up as a Docker tool. It gives visibility into containers, and enables a team to create, start, terminate or redeploy as needed. It also provides a dashboard view of all of the containers under team management. Tutum is now Docker Cloud. Docker Cloud is a new service by Docker that implements all features previously offered by Tutum plus integration with Docker Hub Registry.

This is the lesson that MOOC pioneers have left behind for us to think about as they pivot into the next phase of their business plan: that analytics, automation and personalisation are the basis of a low-cost and skeleton staff educational experience that can be rolled out anywhere, and that only needs a modest fee-for-access to cover its costs, providing the market reach is wide enough.

There are four serial cables and two additional parallel cables. These all connect Commodore drives to the PC parallel port. Also, using the serial cables, you can connect a Commodore machine to the PC, too. Depending on what Commodore and PC hardware you have, what operating system you are running on your PC and what transfer speed you want to achieve, you may select among a number of cables and cable pairs. For a detailed guide on selecting, see below. The cables are the following. For more infos on each cable, follow the link on the cable name.

Digital inheritance is the process of handing over (personal) digital media in the form of digital assets and rights to (human) beneficiaries. The process includes understanding what digital assets and rights exist and dealing with them after a person has died. Digital media play an increasingly important role in life. The media in which a digital inheritance resides can be owned by or independent of the deceased. In contrast with physical assets, digital assets are ephemeral and subject to constant change. Intellectual property and privacy are additional factors. Digital inheritance may present a challenge for data heirs in its complexity and intricacy, and may have legal implications. With the average person having multiple online accounts, digital inheritance has become a complex issue.
Profound words of wisdom from 80’s hair-metal masters, Ratt. These came to mind as I was reading Roland Barth’s 1977 look back at open education. I was also reminded of my experience weeding the Education section of our library collection, when I found book after book from the 70s examining issues that are still being examined today. What goes around comes around, give it time. Open education meant something different to Barth though. It was a term created by American education researchers to describe practices that were going on in British primary education in the 1960s. Their practices were not coordinated or based on any grand theory, but rather something that grew out of the conditions of the times.

Essentially, all you’re doing here is making a simple Python script that will upload all the photo files from a USB drive to Flickr (with the viewing set to private) when it’s connected to the Pi. When it’s done, the script sends you an email to say it’s ready then unmounts the storage device. It’s a very simple little program, but if you’re annoyed at Flickr’s paywall but still use the service, this is a nice way around it.

Use the Comet64 Internet Modem to connect your Commodore 64, SX-64, Vic-20 or Commodore 128 to the Internet. Using software found on CommodoreServer.com, you can connect to CommodoreServer.com to download games and other files as well as connect to other Internet resources. Depending on software availability, you can view email, chat, Twitter, Facebook, FTP, use CSIP (on CommodoreServer.com), WWW, or use just about any Internet protocol available today. The board provides what is known as Serial-to-Ethernet and works by sending commands to it to communicate on a high-level protocol (no need to use a TCP/IP stack or other low-level software). Any software that supports Serial-to-Ethernet may be used.
Your Commodore 64/128 machine can join the growing ranks of Internet capable systems by installing the 64NIC+ Ethernet interface. 64NIC+ offers inexpensive Ethernet connectivity and more. Based on the Crystal CS8900 10 megabit Ethernet interface engine, the interface emulates the popular RR-NET solution as well as the NET64 and TFE systems. Designed by Brain Innovations and previously sold as a fundraiser for the the Cincinnati Commodore Computer Club (CCCC), 64NIC+ allows the Commodore user to experience online connectivity in true 8-bit glory. Play online Ethernet games, telnet to your favorite BBSes, Twitter from your Commodore! In addition to Ethernet capabilities, the system also includes an optional on board ROM socket that can be loaded with up to 16 cartridge images. With the appropriate ROM, the 64NIC+ can autoboot and load your favorite games and utilities via TCP/IP, no disk drive required.
The Aprotek Minimodem-C24, at 2400 bps, was the fastest modem that plugged straight into a Commodore without an interface. With an interface, any Hayes-compatible modem will work just fine, keeping in mind the hardware limitations. Novaterm was the name of a C-64 program that could go to 4800 baud with an ordinary RS-232 interface. DesTerm could reach 9600 baud on a C-128, since the 128 had a faster CPU. Most software didn’t support the 6551-based cartridges, but Novaterm and DesTerm did, so you can use the same program with a 6551 to get higher speeds out of a Commodore with an RS-232 (serial) modem.

The Domain Awareness Center (DAC) is a planned surveillance hub which aims to integrate public and private cameras and sensors all over the City of Oakland into one $10.9M mass surveillance system. After mounting opposition to DAC in 2013 and 2014, The Oakland City Council voted on March 4, 2014 to restrict DAC to a primarily Port-focused operation by removing citywide ShotSpotter maps and city traffic cameras from the system, and requiring any further expansion or information-sharing decisions to come before the Council for approval. Needless to say, this issue is highly controversial, and not only here in Oakland: many US cities, and other cities worldwide, are watching closely to see how Oakland’s example will play out.

I mean artists who were trained to pay attention to the Internet, understand the concept of media specificity, who see their work in relation to projects previously created. The Last -- Net artist active in between dot.com crash and web 2.0 rise. I'm talking about circa 2000--2005. I can still remember very well these dark years. Bubbles busted, there were no new events or festivals or journalists willing to write about things online. Fellows were leaving to make installations, announced retirement. Researchers wouldn't hesitate to talk about the death of net art in the presence of net artists who were still working, online or offline, doing the projects about the Internet. The 3rd -- artists working with the WWW as mass medium, not new medium.
A couple of weeks ago I started playing with combining images in the browser. There are several ways to go about this, I found a nice script to blend two images on a canvas and gave that a shot. It worked well and gave interesting results. I though that using the Flickr API I could gather a list of images and randomly blend them two at a time. Flickr’s API will return a json list. I started using the flickr.interestingness.getList which produced some interesting (sic) combinations. However when I started to get the license of the photos most were not labled for reuse.
I recently had to replace every occurrence of a certain word / string in a ton of files spanning multiple directories, and this is the quickest way I've found to do it. It uses grep to search for a certain word and if it find its it runs sed to replace the strings you want. Note: This will not work on windows systems
In hip hop's earliest days, the music only existed in live form, and the music was spread via tapes of parties and shows. Hip hop mixtapes first appeared in the mid-1970s in New York City, featuring artists such as Kool Herc and Afrika...
To search for Williams in today’s Rome is to explore the vestiges of that heady, messy period after the fall of Mussolini but before the so-called Italian economic miracle of the 1950s and 1960s. When he arrived in 1948, the newly open city was the epicenter of a just-dawning golden age of Italian neorealist cinema. The dollar was strong, prices were low, and, as Williams put it, “an Americano could get away with a whole lot.”
Paolo Angeli has a whole toy shop aboard his guitar: He's got hammers, pedals, propellers, springs, drone strings and even a couple of cell-phone ringers at his disposal.
Jocko Homo, the thrilling B-side of debut single Mongoloid, was one of the first songs the fivepiece came up with. With its off-kilter 7/4 rhythm and infectious chants, it perfectly summed up Devo's musical and theoretical mission statement, and has long been the centrepiece of their wild live shows (recently documented on Miracle Witness Hour, recorded in 1977). "It was always our performance stamp," says Mark Mothersbaugh, the song's primary writer. "It had the opportunity to be the craziest thing we did all night!"
Prompted by a joint coursemodule team to look at options surrounding a “virtual computing lab” to support a couple of new level 1 (first year equivalent) IT and computing courses (they should know better?!;-), I had another scout around and came across SageMathCloud, which looks at first glance to be just magical:-)
At OER16 we explored letting some of our presenters present virtually. This raises interesting questions about cost. Whilst virtual participants won’t eat your food or sit in your venue there is still expenditure in resourcing and organising events. OER16 would not be happening if it were not for all the hours invested by the programme committee and other supporters. We also encounter the challenge for OER events that ‘open’ equals ‘free’. This area was recently touched upon by Martin Weller in his ‘Positive openness’ post:
Scientist Vivienne Ming says she can foretell a child’s earning potential, happiness, even longevity. But not all her claims add up.
The BYU University API committee has been looking for a good project to jumpstart our efforts in personal APIs. The BYU Domains project is not only providing the means to host the personal API, but the initial project as well.
This is not so much thinking of Docker from an enterprise perspective as an environment that supports development and auto-scaled deployment of containerised applications and services, nor is it a view that a web hosting service might take of Docker images providing an appropriate packaging format for the self-service deployment of long-lived services, such as blogs or wiki applications, (a Docker hub and deployment system to rival cPanel, for example). Instead, it’s a user-centric, rather than devops-centric view, seeing containers from a single user, desktop perspective, seeing Docker and its ilk as providing an environment that can support off-the-shelf, ready to run tools and applications, that can be run locally or in the cloud, individually or in concert with each other.
Just two days to Codemotion Rome 2016 and we are super excited! As you know we have many international speakers, coming from outside Europe as well. Like Alessandro Nadalin, an Italian guy who lives in Dubai, working as VP Technology at Namshi, a fashion e-commerce in the middle-east. He is a seasoned technical leader, who pays a lot of attention to enterprise patterns, methodologies and SOA. When he’s not working, you can find him speaking at some conferences, blogging or eating some Indonesian food in the old side of Dubai. He is going to give two talks at Codemotion Rome: “React Native in the wild” and “Dockerize it: stop living in the past and embrace the future”.
Opened in 1956, Southdale Center in Edina, MN was the first fully enclosed shopping mall of its kind. Designed by Victor Gruen, it became the archetype of the typical American mall. Malcolm Gladwell's New Yorker piece about Gruen is a great read.
Southdale Mall still exists. It is situated off I-494, south of downtown Minneapolis and west of the airport -- a big concrete box in a sea of parking. The anchor tenants are now J.C. Penney and Marshall Field's, and there is an Ann Taylor and a Sunglass Hut and a Foot Locker and just about every other chain store that you've ever seen in a mall. It does not seem like a historic building, which is precisely why it is one. Fifty years ago, Victor Gruen designed a fully enclosed, introverted, multitiered, double-anchor-tenant shopping complex with a garden court under a skylight -- and today virtually every regional shopping center in America is a fully enclosed, introverted, multitiered, double-anchor-tenant complex with a garden court under a skylight. Victor Gruen didn't design a building; he designed an archetype. For a decade, he gave speeches about it and wrote books and met with one developer after another and waved his hands in the air excitedly, and over the past half century that archetype has been reproduced so faithfully on so many thousands of occasions that today virtually every suburban American goes shopping or wanders around or hangs out in a Southdale facsimile at least once or twice a month. Victor Gruen may well have been the most influential architect of the twentieth century. He invented the mall.
Things were changing even as that piece was published in 2004. Sprawling shopping malls are closing and new construction has slowed dramatically. Commerce moved online and to big box stores. Southdale's still kicking though!

More than 75,000 automated Twitter accounts are being used in Mexico to combat protests and attack critics of the government, according to research presented by writer Erin Gallagher at the Chaos Communication Camp in Zehdenick, Germany earlier this month.
Adding a new drive to CentOS or RedHat systems. Making use of a second drive for extra space? Here's a quick run-down: 1) Make sure you know which disk is being formatted. First, second, and third drives will be /dev/sda, /dev/sdb, and /dev/sdc respectively. Check this with fdisk -l
InMotion Hosting is able to change the Document root location where your Primary domain points to. This allows the file structure to be maintained how the developer wants to reference the files in the website code. This article will explain how to get the document root changed for your primary domain.
Nora Forknail's "Dear #ds106" advice video for future students! So good.
Over the years I've written a number of posts about the Crime Wave of the Late 20th Century, its causes, political repercussions and the long shadow it still casts over our society. What drove the rise of crime starting in the mid-1960s and its precipitous fall from the early-mid-1990s is no mere matter of historical interest. Today we talk a lot about mass incarceration, the militarization of policing and various other excesses of policing and corrections. But our ability to do so, to have any political shot at change is heavily, heavily tied to the drop of crime over the last 25 years. If crime shoots back up again, we're back to the political environment of the 70s and 80s that created mass incarceration and all the rest. But we can't have any confidence that it won't shoot up again if we don't have a clear idea why it dropped in the first place or, for that matter, why it started spiking thirty years earlier.
It’s also one of the tools Reclaim Hosting makes available through Domain of One’s Own, so that makes it easy to set up with a one-click install. Storage space is a potential issue, so I wanted to offload that to S3. I wondered how to connect the two, so I googled it and what do you know? Jim wrote up a walk-through a few months ago. This was kind of a lifesaver because the process involves typing some arcane gibberish in both the S3 settings and the Omeka config.ini file. I ran into a problem with the Amazon endpoint. Apparently you (or I) do need to specify the endpoint, which means figuring out what it is. The nice people at Reclaim helped me out with that. My S3 account is in the US West region for some reason, so the endpoint is https:/
Our team started with a curiosity about Scalar and along the way formed a collaboration with two graduate students to compare it with three similar services. These “lightweight digital collection platforms” as we call them each have potential to fit the needs of students, staff, and faculty who want to build their own digital collection. Supporting this kind of scholarship using these tools today is very challenging, however, because none of them quite meet all of the requirements. In the end, we found ourselves imagining a drupal-based cloud platform and service designed for small digital collections, which we call “drupal.edu”.
As a company, Reclaim Hosting is heavily invested in the cPanel software to drive a decent user experience for building on the web. It's been interesting to see them evolve the product after what honestly seemed like years of stagnation. The x3 theme which was still the default just a few years ago and felt straight out of the 90s has been replaced with Paper Lantern, a responsive theme built with Bootstrap, Angular, and jQuery. I've also kept a close eye not just on the user-facing features but also the administration tools. I love that they openly welcome discussion (and participate themselves!) in their Feature Request area and you can see as things develop and are coming down the pipe.
In 2012, a reconfiguration in how Google ranked pages caused MetaFilter’s revenues to drop overnight. During the next few years, Matt struggled to keep MetaFilter afloat. Just over a year ago, Matt stepped back from his day-to-day role. Indie.vc caught up with him last week to check in on how things have been going.
Yesterday afternoon we held the first OU Creaties award luncheon, which was a ton of fun. As I wrote a couple weeks ago, it’s great to get to celebrate the work of your community. We wanted to simply have a way to acknowledge and showcase the work that has taken place at the OU since we started our domain of one’s own project, OU Create, via Reclaim Hosting, and I think it’s safe to say we accomplished that.
ROBOTS.TXT is a stupid, silly idea in the modern era. Archive Team entirely ignores it and with precisely one exception, everyone else should too.
Bryan, why haven’t I had this thought before? I’m in the shower — where all good ideas are formed. Well — not formed as such, just realised. There’s something about the sensation of water on skin that grabs the half-baked thoughts hidden deep within the subconscious — thoughts which have been jolting around my grey matter while I slept...
TL; DR: Getting started building a website can be daunting. The combination of hardware and software, the terms and technology, and the never ending stream of bad information on the Internet leaves a lot of folks scratching their head and giving up on their dreams of a digital identity. Tim Owens and Jim Groom envision a world where hosting is simple, shared, and available to anyone that has a desire to claim it. Together they’re turning that dream into reality with easily accessible hosting for everyone — including a product for students and staff to get free hosting through their university.
Academics succeed mostly by their mastery of communication. They are able to aptly draw attention to themselves and their accomplishments. They know how to “appear” modest when in truth, their whole objective is self-promotion. Hackers let their work speak for themselves. In fact, it is not rare that it is exceedingly difficult to find out who built such or such tool.
I first saw #IndieEdTech on a Tom Woodward tweet, which may be why it caught my attention. I work with Tom at Virginia Commonwealth University’s Academic Learning Transformation Lab and have never known him to be a casual hashtagger. As I contemplated the hashtag, I remembered he was attending the Indie EdTech Data Learning Summit, a meeting on personal APIs hosted by Davidson College, a meeting so low key it had escaped my radar entirely until I was trying to track down Tom and Jon Becker, who were both there.
I have gradually begun to take control of my own data. Having always been interested in Open Education and the extension of this to control my own data I have made a number of changes over the years to how I manage my own data & control my own technologies.
Audiogrep is a python script that transcribes audio files and then creates audio “supercuts” based on search phrases. It uses CMU Pocketsphinx for speech-to-text, and pydub to splice audio segments together.
dockerfile for audiogrep and pocketsphinx. Run the build script to build the container, and the run script to run it (you'll want to mount your home directory not mine). After running the container you can use the audiogrep command to run audiogrep.
For the 17th year, the American Cinematheque brings film noir back to the big screen in Los Angeles! Co-presented with the Film Noir Foundation, our 17th annual Noir City festival offers three weeks of jaded gumshoes, femmes fatale and menacing heavies in gloriously gritty black-and-white. These evenings shine a spotlight on some usual suspects as well as rarely screened gems, including the Foundation’s new 35mm restorations of THE GUILTY and WOMAN ON THE RUN, as well as new prints of THE UNDERWORLD STORY, NO ABRAS NUNCA ESA PUERTA and SI MUERO ANTES DE DESPERTAR (two classic Argentine noirs making their Los Angeles premieres!). Whether you’re a noir novice or a longtime aficionado of the postwar demimonde of crime and (occasionally) punishment, Noir City is well worth a visit.

We began by discussing the Domain of One’s Own movement. Jim described it as a way to think through technology in order to empower the educational community beyond tech skills and training. He cited Jon Udell‘s vision of Wikipedia as a place where knowledge is socially constructed...
Maybe the most important legacy of the bands in the book is an approach that [Minutemen’s] Mike Watt outlines in Our Band Could Be Your Life: “We just could never see mass acceptance of our music. But that didn’t make it little to us—it was still important. But if we were going to do it, we had to make sure the dream fit the tent. A massive bourgeois tent would be too much dead weight. Let’s just carry enough to get us there.” That is the crux of the book and it applies more than ever today, as making music becomes even less lucrative than it ever was.

Fugazi is a band from Washington, D.C. featuring Ian MacKaye, Joe Lally, Brendan Canty and Guy Picciotto. They played their first show on September 3, 1987, and have since released seven albums and played over 1000 concerts, covering all fifty United States, Europe, Australia, South America, Japan and many points in between. The band is self-managed and release all their material through Dischord Records. Fugazi always made sure their concerts were open to people of all-ages and were ticketed at a reasonable price, usually $5 to $7. Over 800 of these shows were recorded by the band's sound engineers, Joey Picuri and Nick Pellicciotto, often
